Musicians: DO NOT deal with EMUSIC

After being scammed by EMUSIC I come here to appeal to all musicians that do not like illegal downloads. DO NOT DEAL with EMUSIC. They cheat their customers, many of them are first timers like myself.

I have been always buying CD's and I decided to try it out the EMUSIC shop. Below you will find my rant against them. So, please do not sell your work with EMUSIC, after my bad experience with EMUSIC I will buy CD's only.

In times where illegal downloads are a pest and hard to control we do not need companies like EMUSIC to convince people that illegal is safer.

Virtual shop for music never more!

eMusic = Scam

Well, nowadays everybody has a change to be victim of a scam, this time I've been a victim. I bought a Rolling Stone magazine and found a coupon to download 25 free songs from www.emusic.com (I will upload such advertisement later). I did not care about it for while but I decided to try it by December 18 2010. I could not hurt, after all if you don't like just cancel your account before 7 days. I downloaded some songs.

Here are MY reasons to cancel the service immediately:

  1. it is a mess to find something
  2. catalog is not big enough to encompass all classical rock plus alternative
  3. the alternative bands I like can be found easily at Amazon
  4. doesn't work right way on Linux!
The last item is like a heresy for me. I have been a Linux user since 1999 and running only Linux since 2002. So if their website is not ready to work with Firefox and Linux, forget it! That's what I did, cancel my subscription immediately.

After following the procedures to cancel it (BTW, it was hard to find a way to cancel an account) I could not find my account again. So it should be definitely deleted. I never got an e-mail confirming it but since I could not log back it should be fine.

I never got back to that website and, my worst mistake, don't check my credit card balance right way. I was not using my credit card so I forgot to check. By February I locate the EMUSIC labels in my credit card balance.

Startled by that finding I immediately went to their website and try to log back. It worked! Like magic my account has not being deleted nor canceled. And recurring payments have been done so far.

I contacted their support, canceled my subscription, canceled my credit card and filed a dispute with my credit card company.

The EMUSIC support is a shame. They keep saying the same thing over and over. "As stated by Terms and Conditions we cannot refund your money" even if you have canceled and never ever got back to their system. They keep asking for a confirmation that I have canceled my subscription but their system have never issued that confirmation to my e-mail nor sent me to a page where I could print the confirmation.

There is no confirmation and by their "Terms and Conditions" what you paid will be kept in their pocket forever even if you have never used their service.
Hence this is scam!

I recently filed a complaint in the FTC website (https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/). If you have been a victim of this company I encourage you to file a complaint at FTC. I doesn't take more than 15 minutes and the information you need can be found here: http://www.emusic.com/about/contact/office.html
